NCTE/IRA & Common Core Standards

NCTE/IRA
My perceptions of these standards are that they have a theme of reading and understand texts. I feel like students are to read, interpret and appreciate non-fiction and fiction works. I also noticed that communication was an important theme. These standards are meant for students to be able to communicate with their peers and to communicate with peers of diverse groups. Students are supposed to understand the diversity there is within language, which I find to be very important. If students are able to do this, then they can become more aware of the cultural world around them. I also found the 12th standard to be my favorite because students can take the information they have learned and use it in any way they want. They can use it for their own pleasure or for learning. The main theme that is present of course is language. Language would be impossible to teach if we did not have classes to help our students understand it.
Common Core
The common core standards seem to be more detailed than the other standards. I noticed that the students are to think more than in the first set of 12. I also noticed that the common core standards are focused on the higher level of Bloom’s Taxonomy. The words such as “analyze” and “determine” are used a lot. There were a lot of standards that wanted the students to compare and contrast the information, which can give the students a better idea of what different texts are like. I also feel like these standards focus more on how the students will act in the outside world and not just in college. These standards are more focused on the student and how the teachers should teach the students.
Compare and Contrast
I feel as though the NCTE standards are more focused on how the student interprets the information, where common core is focused on what the teacher should do to help their students to learn. The two standards do incorporate a lot on language and texts. They both talk a lot of how language should be learned and what different aspects students need to lean about it. Both of them also incorporate culture into learning. To me, I think the NCTE standards talk more about culture, especially with standard 12. The NCTE is easier to understand than the common core as well. Though the common core standards are more detailed, I feel like it is easier to teachers to comprehend the NCTE. The way language is taught, I feel like they both touch students effectively. I am sure they will do so in different ways. The common core standards do provide more ways to use language and how students should apply that language in the real world. Of course both set of standards are effect, but as for the students, I think the NCTE is more effect. The common core standards give teachers structure and ways to use language. The common core seems to be more focused on the student. As a teacher I hope to use both set of these standards. It seems overwhelming right now, but I am sure I will have enough practice to understand them correctly after teaching a few years.
